A Request For Recommendations

A Guys Lit Wire reader has emailed us looking for biography recommendations for her 14 year old nephew. He has an assignment (of course) to read a book of that nature and is particularly interested in WWII and/or the Roman Empire. (I'd like to meet this kid!) If any books come to mind, please let us know in the comments. (I keep thinking he needs to watch "The Great Escape" but that probably doesn't qualify.) (But man - was anyone cooler than Steve McQueen on that motorcycle?)

Sterling Point Books: General George Patton: Old Blood & Guts by Alden Hatch or The Great Escape: The Longest Tunnel (Sterling Point Books Series) by Mike Meserole might be of interest.

The Life and Death of Adolf Hitler by James Giblin has been very popular with the boys in my library. Can't keep it on the shelf ... not that I'd want to!

"Surviving Hitler: a boy in the Nazi death camps" by Andrea Warren comes to mind, as does "Hiding Edith: a true story" - although they might be a bit young for him. With regards to the Great Escape (awesome movie!), he could read "The tunnel king" by Barbara Hehner, which is about a Canadian man who played a key role in that escape.
